Photographer:
Unknown Title:
Commander-in-Chief Ferdinand Foch Date:
c1920s Medium:
Silver Print Size of Image:
6 7/8 x 9 3/8
inches Size of Mount: na Condition:
Rich tonal image, sharp and clean with some light handling marks, penciled notations on verso (look like framers    notes “Southworth Call”).
Newspaper clippings attached to brown paper, quite aged and brittle. Other: Interesting more candid view of Marshal Ferdinand Foch and group of military and civilian individuals than usually seen. Location unknown, however, we believe it was taken during Foch’s 1921 tour of the US where he visited many, many different cities including New York , Boston , Philadelphia , Detroit and Kansas City . Along with the image was found newspaper clippings that must have been attached at one time to the back of the photo when framed. The first article is titled, “France Mourns Marshal Foch: Plans Honors.” The second reads, “Give Foch the Absolute Command, Was Joffre’s Plea…Crisis of War.” Additionally, a small article at top right reads, “
Gov. Allen – The passing of Marshal Ferdinand Foch, commander-in-chief of the allied armies in France
during the world war, brings profound sorrow to us all.
Marshal Foch was a general of extraordinary ability, a gallant soldier, a patriot of the highest order.
He was beloved by all of France
.
The people of Massachusetts
will fondly recall the visit of Gen. Foch to this commonwealth in November, 1921 following the close of the world war, and at a time when his distinguished service was still fresh in the minds of the people. Massachusetts
joins the nation in paying tribute to a great military genius whose achievements won the admiration of the world.
His fame to future generations history will hold secure.
In the heart of America
his memory will be treasured forever.”
This may give some reference to the photo’s location as a site in Massachusetts
.
